Peru calls for debate on the legalization of marijuana

04.01.2014 04:53

Peru should consider legalizing marijuana, the former head of the country’s National Drug Control Commission has said. Uruguay recently became Latin America’s first nation to legalize the marijuana industry, encouraging its neighbors to follow suit.

Pot,cocaine, heroin,m ethamphetamine.Punis h those for whom consumption leads to other crime. If these substances were no longer under prohibition we could stop arresting people for simple possession.Concentra te enforcement onto real criminals doing real crime. The drugs would cost pennies and there would be no allure of the underground to attract kids. There would be age and health limits as well. This has been the largest, failed experiment in behaviour modification in mankind's history.

When Soboron called Uruguay's move to legalize cannabis "a good experience" he almost certainly said it in Spanish. And that phrase in Spanish could also be translated as "a good experiment" which is a better translation in my humble opinion.

A Noble Peace Prize to President Mujica and his colleagues.
What they have done in Uruguay will prove to the world that there never was a need for the totalitarian police state approach to marijuana consumption.
What happens in Uruguay will echo around the world.
As other nations follow and legalize, crime corruption, violence and terrorism will gradually decrease.
Nothing could do more for world peace than ending the drug war.

What is the INCB trying to say? That stuff that's bad for you should be banned? Then why are cigarettes and alcohol still legal around the world, they are much worse than marijuana.

@ cuki Baker!

I agree with Everthing you said except the North Korea comment! There are very few laws around it in N Kroea as it grows wild and on the side if the road, the hermit nation smokes ist own grass

@ Konrad3

[qu ote name='Konrad3' time='04.01.2014 16:26']People saying that weed is harmless should probably hold their tongues. Sure, its kind of harmless, but not entirely.[/quote]

Nobody has said that pot is harmless. Not one doctor and I don't know a smoker that has said that it is completely harmless. However, it is less addictive than alcohol and nicotine.....that is a science fact and stated by doctors NIH, CDC etc.

You need to read and stop making silly statements. Also, there has not been one reorted deadly overdose of pot.

If you don't like the fact that it is smoked, move to N. Korea.

Latin America should do itself a favor and separate itself from my country's policies of imperialism and state terror (using drones, invading other countries, and assassinations by order of Pres. Barack Obama).
Latin America should not let the USA determine its culture by following the USA blindly on drug policy. Let the USA go its way; let Latin America take its own course.

I second that ,the U.S pushed the Single Convention Treaty through the U.N because the U.S suffers from Reefer Madness .

All sort of drug should never be encouraged to be allowed for human consumption.

“Psychedelics are illegal not because a loving government is concerned that you may jump out of a third story window. Psychedelics are illegal because they dissolve opinion structures and culturally laid down models of behaviour and information processing. They open you up to the possibility that everything you know is wrong.”
― Terence McKenna

Uruguay prices it's MerryWanna UNDER black market price,Colorado prices it's MJ DOUBLE the black market price. Which country do you think is serious about eliminating the black market ??

Costa Rica's tourists would be much happier if they could get their hands on decent marijuana, instead of just crappy headache weed. I think all the Central American and South American countries should legalize production, sale, and consumption of mary jane. They'll attract more tourists. Tourists love to get high: it makes them happy and mellow. And they spend more money on food. : )

I feel that we here in The Great White North are not too far behind this change in policy ... We are just waiting for our NEW
Prime Minister !!!

Weed is not good or bad, just like alcohol, tobacco, and prostitution! Free people should be free to live their lives. I am sure that drinking sulfuric acid is dangerous to everybody's health, but we all have the freedom to buy as many gallons of the stuff. A government that thinks that she loves me more than I love myself is too intrusive into my life.

I'm fortunate to be living in Colorado, USA. This is the first legal governmental agency (the state) to legalize mary jane on the planet.

Id be surprised if other governments hadn't already deemed weed as legal years ago.
(but before "recorded history". Maybe some instances weren't even ever recorded. You know how it is sometimes, some people like to "edit" the pages of history)
And please.. stop doing in our heads with your gay trumpet blowing love of the USA parade.
AS IF your country is great; Also the first (and only) to drop the A bomb! & the drones. F USA
