A fusion of fantasy with reality. French guru of puppetry, Philippe Genty, has brought his surreal art to the Russian capital.

His performance ‘Boliloc’, presented at the Chekhov festival, is a synergy of drama, comedy, dance and music.

Genty has his own style, from which he doesn’t swerve. His puppet characters, played by versatile actors, are flexible and dynamic. His performances feature cute creatures that can make the public burst into tears or fall about laughing out of the blue.

‘The most interesting thing for me is to explore conflicts and demons inside a person. I’m not as much interested in people fighting against one another as in a single person left alone with his or her monsters. Psychoanalysis has always been the major inspiration for me,’ says the French artist.

You never know what to expect from the 70-year-old guru of puppetry. Genty set up his own theatre company more than four decades ago. Since then, his touching performances have been surprising theatre lovers on all continents.

A true original, Genty became famous in the 1960s when he went on a tour around the world on his small car giving puppet performances en route.
