A winning first for Hiddink

Published: 17 August, 2006, 10:56

Russia won their first match under new coach Guss Hiddink, beating Latvia 1-0. Hiddink's choice of substitute in Pavel Pogrebnyak paid off, scoring the goal in the last minute.

Latvia had a couple of chances but Russia dominated most of the game and deserved the win. Serious business lies ahead – Russia's first Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia at home on September 9.
