American choreographer in Moscow to stage Checkov

Published: 27 January, 2007, 01:01

American choreographer John Noymayer is in Moscow to stage his ballet “The Seagull” which is based on Anton Chekov's famous play. The performance was a success in Hamburg five years ago.

Now in Moscow rehearsals are in full swing to open at the beginning of March.

Noymayer wants the performance to live up to the work of his favourite writer and so is working the cast very hard.

Though communicating with the Russian dancers is proving 'challenging' he says.

The story takes place in the 19th century, but still Noymayer believes the plot is relevant to this day.

Not only does Noymayer choreograph, he also designs the costumes and the set.

And his next task will be staging another of Chekhov's play “The Three sisters”.
