April 30, 2012 10:15

Inspired by director James Cameron’s idea, a Russian businessman has launched his own Avatar project. Hundreds of researchers are involved in creating a prototype of a human-like robot which would be able to contain the human consciousness.

Another immortality technology would be to hook up a deceased person's spirit to a virtual reality video game, rather than as robot, simply because if the dead person happens to be psychotic, you won't end up with a terminator on your hands but will be able to 'sandbox' their will.

Sign me up. Will be 55 by then, make sure not to be in the first few trials - Then hopefully another 200 years of stuff & things. I would be highly impressed if they get something running effectively / usefully until 2050 or so. How many nerve endings could they couple to something to control / feel to make the body at least be dexterous and agile.

Not sure about eternal life. I have heard some people manage to stay "undead" for a very long time. I personally do not want to be a souless walking corpse in the material world, or an electromagnetic entity living in the cyberspace. I imagine it is a state like Limbo in Dante's Inferno, where spirits wander endlessly. Death is not always the worst thing that could happen.

Already been done by Americans in the classic movie Robocop.
"In the near future, Detroit, Michigan is on the verge of collapse due to financial ruin and unchecked crime. The mega-corporation Omni Consumer Products enters into a contract with the city to run the police force. OCP plans to destroy "Old Detroit" to replace it with the utopia of "Delta City". Recognizing that human law enforcers are insufficient to stop the crime spree, OCP runs several programs to find robotic replacements. One program, the enforcement droid, headed by senior president Dick Jones malfunctions and kills a junior executive during its demonstration. As a result, the OCP Chairman opts for a cyborg program helmed by middle-ranking executive Bob Morton  named "RoboCop".

Scientists are godless and often foolish. So once they figure out how to transcend life everyone will do it? Would anyone besides a mad scientist? Their unwilling animal test-ees, sure. The thought of animal testing by ex-soviets, Godless commies. Lol. At least us yankees pretend to be moral

Egyptian women have urged the country's Islamist-dominated parliament not to pass two controversial laws on age at marriage and sex after death. The two laws include provisions that would void the rights of women to obtaining education and employment due to religious standards. One of the laws would drop the minimum permissible age of marriage to age 14. The other would permit a husband to carry out conjugal relations with his wife within six hours following her death.

Proof that businessmen and science logic does not always go together. What idiot thinks that consciousness can be imported and exported? Only a megalomaniac businessman.

Human brains are obsolete, I am working on a modified Boltzmann machine that can replicate life, consciousness, sentience and what's great about my project is that it can be embodied on current desktop computers, yes they are powerful enough.
You don't need quantum computers to do quantum computing.

It appeared on my screen.  Oops.  I'm not the sharpest in the bunch.  Please let me be an experiment.  Have you seen me?  Would you do this to anyone?

Let's try this again.  I'll say something extremely stupid to keep it up.  These things only last two years, or the ones that have been created so far.  If you need a specimen, you know who to kidnap.  Putin, who's the most attractive man alive? :)  He just can't handle his little female fan, but he's so cute.  Yes, he is.  He's a little dictator and everything.  Do you have anymore photos from 1976 that you could put up on the internet?  I'm running out of entertainment.

All the best to you as well Steve. You make a lot of sense, and for the record, I do apologize if I offended you, and more so for mis-reading you.

I’m not shoving it in your face, my initial post was only motioning I’m a Christian and tbh id call myself a nerd so im in the same group as you, in that sense. Your right the proof is in the pudding! I was only joking about you being nutty, I don’t think you’re a nut! Blah blah communism blah; imagination, I love imagination. Tbf you seem like a nice guy, most of my friends are atheists and I wouldn’t change them for anyone! But I have a curious mind. I’m not say we can’t have a long life, I’m saying we can’t live forever(which is true, well as true as can be). Your right the bible has many interpretations, I agree and I don’t pretend to know the result; in fact I am certain that I don’t know it. But I am also certain that Jesus has something to say and I am certain  that those who listen to him will get more than they bargained for. So whatever the result we will be judged on how we place our bets! All the best bro, thank you for making me think!

Steve, it is nutty to post comments about how eternal life can only be found through Jesus under an article about scientific endeavors. I don't go posting scientific proselytisms under articles about God and religion. I don't mind people believeing in whatever they want to believe, at the same time, I wish they would have the courtesy to not shove it in everyone's face via comments on articles that have nothing to do with religion. The future development of human technology won't affect your ability to go to heaven, so let's not spoil the party for us nerds, OK?

I think the proof is in the pudding, however, with your comment on thinking that exploration of the solar system and beyond makes someone nutty. (BTW: We already are exploring the solar system, AND beyond, so it's not that big of a stretch...) Do you think this is impossible because it somehow doesn't exist, and that the night sky is a communist illusion meant to distract us from more important things like the Bible and giving money to the church, or do you just lack any shred of imagination at all?

The real shame is that there isn't any reason why religious and non-religious people can't walk towards this future hand in hand. If there is a God, he gave us intelligence, imagination, and a curious mind. I highly doubt He would have done this as a cheap or cruel joke. If we ever do achieve longer (than natural) life-spans, couldn't it be because God wanted us to? Although many religious folk disagree, there are proabably an infinite number of ways to read the bible, the variety in sects alone, I think, is proof of that. I have read the bible many times, and as far as I can tell, if God exists in one form or another, I don't think he is against anything we do. We simply exist and we do. If life-extension is a no-no, then we better all stop taking our medication, reject transplants and start spending all of our time praying. Personally, I find that rather depressing, but whatever floats your boat Steve.
