Big guns star in Russian Premier League

The second match day of the new Russian Premier League season saw most of the favourites take three points.
Playing with Spartak, Tom had a great chance to take the lead, but failed. Spartak struggled to create any meaningful opportunities, as Tom were happy to sit back and soak up the pressure.
However, that all changed on 31 minute. A brilliant piece of play by Wellington opened the scoring. The Brazilian showed excellent close control and a great finish to put his side into the lead.
Tom pushed for an equalizer, but they were let down by a lack of imagination in attack, while the home side were content to hit them on the counter attack.
On the hour mark, Tom should have equalized. Substitute Igor Stenkov found himself clean through – but his finish was woeful. The forward tried to bend it past Plitkosa – but got it horribly wrong.
The visitors continued to attack and would have drawn level had it not been for the brillience of Pletikosa. The Croat producing a fantastic double save to keep his side in the lead.
Making sure they don’t lose any early ground to their rivals – CSKA Moscow got a win too. A solid 2-0 away victory over Krylia Sovetov.
Lokomotiv came from behind to beat Shinnik 2-1.
Shinnik, the premiership newboys, who drew with CSKA last week, got an early penalty, Denis Boyarintsev going down in the box. Lazarov then sent the keeper the wrong way.
But Loko launched a second half fightback – through Nigerian striker Piter Odemvingie. He equalised from a pin-point free kick. And was in the right place at the right time again for the second – slotting home with 20 minutes left.
Saturn hosted newly promoted Terek and beat them 3-1. A tough start for Chechen club in the top-flight – their second defeat in two games.
Both sides produced a sluggish start in the first half at the Dynamo stadium, where the home side looked to be better organized playing with Khimki. But the white-blues didn’t manage to convert their advantage. Dynamo had a couple of goal-scoring opportunities, but Khimki’s goalkeeper rescued his side.
From the very beginning of the second half the Muscovites poured forward. And they got their first goal of the season 52 minutes into the game. Igor Semshov received a pinpoint pass in the area, and fired home, opening the scoring.
Dynamo’s second goal came 15 minutes after the first one. TsvEtan GEnkov broke clear and did all the right things to make it 2-0.
Amkar were at Spartak Nalchik and managed to eke out a 1-0 victory thanks to an early goal.
The defence was asleep, with the simple long ball eluding everyone except Zhilyaev who gratefully tucked the ball away.
The home side couldn't get back in it. They stay midtable on three points. Amkar are top on goal difference with six points out of six.
Meanwhile Rubin had a bit of luck in their latest 1-0 win over Luch-Energiya.
An own-goal from Aleksandr She-shukov handed Rubin the points. Finding the smallest of gaps between his own keeper and the post.
Blokhin suffers a defeat
All the talk before the FC Moscow match with Zenit had been about the Muscovites coach Oleg Blokhin, who was completely ignoring the press in the build-up to the match.
Meanwhile Zenit, despite their opening day draw against Spartak Moscow, had been in good form, and they got off to the best possible start, with Andrey Arshavin giving them the lead just three minutes in.
The Russian international bent in an excellent free kick, which left Yury Zhevnov with no chance.
Zenit could have gone two up just minutes later. The FC Moscow defence failing to deal with Arshavin's corner, but Igor Denisov was unable to stab the ball home, with the home defence at sixes and sevens.
Arshavin was continuing to cause havoc, as Zenit could have been four up. Konstantin Zryanov just failing to get on the end of his teammates cross.
FC Moscow just could not get in the game – but the almost drew level with five minutes to go before half time.
Roman Adamov seeing his shot come back off the cross bar.
Zenit continued where they left off in the second half. Arshavin could have doubled his side's lead, but Zhevnov did well to deny the Russian International.
The St. Petersburg side went 2-0 up on the hour mark, with the goal coming from the most unlikely source. Aleksandr Anukov drilling his shot past Zhevnov.
A good finish by the Zenit full back, but perhaps the FC Moscow keeper could have done better.
The home side started to press forward – Hector Brakamonte seeing his shot deflected narrowly wide.
But the Argentine should have scored have scored with time running out. Great work by Maxi Lopez – but Brakomote really should have done better, as it seemed easier to find the back of the net.
Not FC Moscow's day, as Zenit ran out comfortable 2-0 winners.
