The trolleybus, the most environmentally-friendly means of transport, marks its 75th anniversary in Moscow. This weekend, both old and new trolleybuses will be on display to mark the occasion when the trusted form of transport appeared in the city.

Since 1933, when the first trolleybus passenger took a ride, the Russian capital has developed the largest trolleybus network in the world. Around 1600 Moscow trolleybuses carry over one million passengers daily along total of 87 routes.

Despite the capital's heavy traffic, trolleybuses remain one of the most popular means of transport in Moscow. According to Olga Terno from the Press service of the Moscow transport service, trolleybuses continue to thrive in the capital.

“The public transport system in general is well developed here in Moscow, but it’s also the ‘trolleybus capital of the world’. Moscow is one of the few cities where the trolleybus has not only survived, but is also still evolving,” she said. “Today, many cities, given the current fuel prices and the ecological situation, are starting to develop their own trolleybuses, which they replaced with buses in the 1970s. We don’t have to do that in Moscow. Two years ago, the trolleybus network reached beyond the Moscow ring road and into the suburbs.”
