Blind cafe offers dining in the dark

Published: 03 May, 2007, 06:34

Now everyone in Moscow can learn what it feels like to be blind. A unique cafe offers people the chance to dine in complete darkness. 'Dans Le Noir' is like no other in Moscow and one in only a handful of its kind in the world.

There are few clues in the bar as for why its owner Igor Medvedev had made the experience of eating there truly unique in Russia.

Explaining the reason for creating such a café, the owner of  Dans le nouir café, Igor Medvedev, said he'd like to breach the gap between blind people and society: “For me the main target was to wipe away the differences between blind people and those who can see. There are certain time limits for staying in complete darkness. It is impossible to be there for more than two hours. It can affect your brain. That is why we hire only blind people to work here”.

The only clues in the dining room are waiters, who easily operate in total darkness. Ali Yunisov, one of Igor's waiters is blind and he shared his own experience of serving  sighted people. He finds working at Dans Le Noir inspiring:  “People start to realise that we are like them they rely on us .in everything in the dark room we guide them”.

A female visitor shares her experience of eating in the café: “My first impression was surprise because it is a totally unfamiliar situation”.

Another client says that at first he felt lonely and was disorientated : “I thought I could fall, but then it got easier”.
