An example of Rankin's work

This week marks the beginning of International Photography Month in Moscow. Among the international photographers to exhibit their works at personal shows across the city is John Rankin Waddell – generally known as Rankin.

It's almost impossible to imagine that Rankin was once dubbed ‘the enfant terrible’ of British photography by the critics.

Rankin embarked on the road to success in 1991, when he co-founded the Dazed and Confused magazine – the fashion and style flagship for young Brits.

The exhibition in Moscow features Rankin's Visually Hungry project. It's an overview of the photographer's creative activities uniting several of his photo shoots.

They range from women-like “Cats” to Tuulitastic – a whole photobook of his muse and girlfriend, Tuuli.

“He's very good at taking any subject. He could put anyone in front of him and then take a brilliant photo. He could take a photo of politician or a picture of a rock star, and he still gets the essence of that personality because that's the kind of person he is and the kind of photographer he is,” Tuuli explains.
