Caucasian Mountain dog: friend and guard

Published: 28 February, 2007, 11:29

The Caucasus is known as a land of shepherd culture and wild valleys. And its there where the geography and natural selection has produced a most spectacular breed of guard dog, the Caucasian Mountain Dog.

These large, bear-like dogs have served the people of the Caucasus for centuries as a guard for their cattle.

The breed is said to have the ability to discriminate between a real threat and harmless playing around. However, successful ownership depends on serious training as well as the dog’s good character.

‘It depends on the care you give, of course. So far, I have not had any disappointment about these dogs, maybe it is their pedigree or maybe it is me but they are so reliable, never had a problem. I keep these Shepard dogs. For example imagine if the Shepard falls asleep or misses something, dogs are so aware, they help and protect from wolves and other predators , or even stealing,’ Seipun Gulelauri,  a shepherd, says.

Even though, the Caucasian Mountain Dog was specially bred to look after cattle, some people still want to have one at home. For those, excellent puppies are for sale from the club which specialises in this breed.

The Caucasian Mountain Dog lover’s club is busy promoting the breed and regularly takes part exhibitions and dog shows.

‘First of all, the Caucasian shepherd dog is the only kind that is left from the old times in Georgia. We used to have another kind before that is not here anymore. But we have worked on the project with the help of the city municipality to maintain and preserve the kind ,’ Gia Giorgadze,Club President, states.

The Caucasian dog is destined to be a strong protector from a wolf, a coyote and even a neighbor’s dog. At the same time, he is a family-loving, charming creature.
