CSKA Moscow knocked out of domestic cup

Published: 27 February, 2007, 00:54

Reigning champions, CSKA, have been knocked out of the Russian Cup by Krylya Sovetov that won the second leg 2-0 to go through to the quarterfinal. Runners-up, Spartak Moscow, beat Sibir on a pitch covered with snow.

Current title holders, CSKA, visited Krylya Sovetov, who were forced to play at Moscow's Luzhniki because their stadium is not ready for the season yet. But CSKA fell behind after just 16 minutes. Bosnian Marco Topic was put through by a smart pass from Denis Kovba and didn't waste his chance.

The red-blue side created some good moments but were unable to get their reward. “I think the guys did a really great job in defence today. Off course, they had some tough times back there, but, again, they looked worthy,” concluded Krylya Sovetov’s goalkeeper, Aleksandr Makarov.

The game was over 7 minutes from time, when Anton Bober grabbed the rebound after Igor Akinfeev's punch and slotted the ball home with a direct shot. It was a 4th straight game without a goal for the Russian champions and Krylya Sovetov go trough to the quater-final.

Meanwhile, Spartak Moscow went through 4-1 on aggregate against Sibir on a pitch covered with snow. The Muscovites needed some time to get used to such weather conditions. They went one behind but Denis Boyarintsev made it 1-1 early in the second half, making it 2-1 to Spartak on aggregate.

And more goals followed. Nikita Bazhenov beats his man and sets up 18-year old Artem Dzyuba, lovely goal giving them a two goal cushion. And Bazhenov set up Egor Titov for the third.

So, last years' runners-up are on their way to the quarterfinal.

Finally, FC Moscow beat Amkar 3-0 in the first leg of their tie. Pablo Barrientos stuck first 55 minutes in. Further goals from Bronislav Krunich and Pyotr Bystrov followed Moskva now take a commanding 3-0 lead going into the second leg next week in Perm.
