Pocketing a large amount of money turned out to be more appealing to doctors at a hospital in south Russia than saving human lives.
Four doctors are accused of repeatedly using disposable catheters.
Although they washed them before each use, the risk of transmitting HIV and hepatitis C remained.
Around 1,600 patients at the clinic will now have to be tested.
The doctors, who reportedly pocketed 10 million rubles ($3 million) by re-using the catheters, now face prosecution.
