The Russian drama “Buben, Baraban” (“Tambourine, Drum”) has picked up two special awards at the festival of East European Cinema in Cottbus, Germany.
The film’s director Aleksey Mizgirev has been named Best Director for his sad love drama, along with Zvonimir Juric and Goran Devic from Croatia, who were also named best directors for their movie “The Blacks”.
Apart from the cash prize of over $11,000, the Russian director received accolades from the critics and the jury, which described “Tambourine, Drum” as “an example of classical Chekhovian style.”
Earlier this summer, Mizgirev had already been named Best Director at one of the world’s oldest film festivals in Locarno, Switzerland, as well as a special prize from the jury.
The drama is set in 1998 in a provincial Russian mining town and centers on 45-year-old librarian Katya, who barely makes a living as she shares a tiny room in a hostel with a friend. Things do change – though not for the better – when Katya falls in love with a sailor who hits town to start life over from scratch.
