A family of three, including a newborn baby, spent nearly an hour on the roof of their sinking car before being rescued by an off-duty policeman.
The car had been swept downriver after attempting to traverse the water at a special crossing point during a flood in the Russian republic of Bashkortostan. As the car began to founder in the icy water, the parents managed to climb onto the roof with their son.
Several motorists passing by stopped and watched the drama unfold, but were unable, or unwilling, to help. One of them started to film the scene, ignoring pleas to use the phone to call for help instead.
Help did come, but only 40 minutes later when a passing traffic cop stopped. He attached a rope to himself and his car, and got into the cold water. One by one he rescued the family and even their belongings.
The 37-year-old hero says he cannot understand why nobody else tried to help.
