Published: 26 February, 2007, 07:08

World-renowned conductor and cellist, Mstislav Rostropovich, has been awarded the Order of Service to Fatherland in Moscow for “outstanding contribution to the development of world music and many years of creative activity.”

This was said in a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin.

The musician studied at the Moscow Conservatoire, where he became a professor in 1956 and is considered by some to be one of the greatest cellists ever.

79-year-old Rostropovich has been hospitalised twice this month for reasons which have yet to be released.
