Caring for the elderly

A series of recent fires has put Russia's retirement homes under the microscope. Many of those that burned were found to be overcrowded and underfunded. But one nursing facility in the Penza region is on the way to setting a new standard for others to fol

People are poor in the town of Bekovo, which suffers from high unemployment and an ageing population.

When senior citizens can no longer look after themselves, many come to the town's retirement home.

It is set in spectacular countryside and the building itself was once an aristocratic estate, supposedly visited by Pushkin – Russia’s most famous poet.

Money is in short supply, as it is in many of the country’s retirement homes. The last major renovation was more than 25 years ago and signs of disrepair are evident.

But unlike other facilities, where residents are often crammed up to six in a room, the lack of cash doesn’t seem to have affected living standards. Most of the 120 pensioners share dated but spacious rooms.  Safety regulations are strictly observed.  Potentially hazardous electrical equipment is banned and the home has a brand new fire alarm system.

There is 24-hour medical care and residents can visit a well-stocked library and two television rooms.

Recent improvements means there are effectively two different buildings under the same roof. Passing through an old Soviet-style hallway and living room you get to a clear and bright renovated wing.

The staff knows things aren’t perfect but they are getting better. The changes are already making a difference to those lucky enough to be in the newly redecorated rooms.  The management expect more steps in the right direction.

The residents remain optimisitc. The staff have created an environment where people can be cared for while still maintaining a sense of independence.

Most have keys to their own rooms and some even brave minus 30 degree frosts to do their own laundry.
