Promising Russian director Kirill Serebryanikov has presented his view of the renowned “Figaro” plays by Pierre de Beaumarchais. The director is well-known for his unexpected and groundbreaking staging.
His production entitled “One Day in the Life of Figaro” is far from the original scripts. The play is staged in a modern setting and costumes. However, Kirill Serebryanikov denies all accusations that these changes put a damper on the play. He claims the essence is still the same. All the changes are just intended to render the story more relevant. “It's still a very funny French play, and you have to play it without excessive seriousness, no matter how it’s been changed,” actor Avangard Leontiev remarks. The play is expected to tour Russia, so the scenery has been kept quite simple – in order to be transported easily. It will be staged at many theatres in Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is an independent production and not tied to any theatre company, so that the director can invite any actor to take a part in the play. Thus the performance includes some leading Russian players from different theatres, which some say is certain to assure success for the production.
