Moscow on a budget

People in Russia have some experience of how to deal with a financial crisis. Only a decade has passed since the country experienced economic turmoil and the lessons have not been forgotten. Moscow may have become one of the most expensive cities in the w

Real estate price pressures to push Moscow beyond London

Moscow's been tipped to overtake London as the world's most expensive place to rent an office, as a UK recession pushes prices down. Russian estate agents even see rates going up, as demand for quality Moscow property remains strong.

Retail therapy on a grand scale might be the best way of overcoming the economic crisis. But that means spending serious amounts of money – an option not open to many of us these days. But it’s not a problem for the super-rich, who are preparin

With oil prices hitting record lows, the Millionaire Fair looks increasingly like a slap in the face for those poor suckers poor enough to be hit by the recession.

The annual event brings together producers of some of the most exquisite merchandise this side of paradise, including bejeweled electronic devices, bespoke cars and personal jets. So, if you’re interested in helicopters covered in Swarovski crystals, real tigers, yachts, jewellery and even islands – the Moscow Millionaire Fair is the place for you.

Prominent Russian ballerina Anastasia Volochkova, who apparently isn’t short of a few roubles, said: “I bought this cell phone decorated with Swarovski crystals. Some of them have fallen out but this is an accessory I never part with.”

Companies offering goods and services at this year's Fair say rich Russians are increasingly turning to things that will hold their value, such as paintings, antiques and musical instruments.

The event also has another, quite predictable, side.

University graduate Lyuba Arbuzova hasn't earned her first million yet. Neither has she met the man of her dreams. So she's looking forward to finding both at this year’s Fair. So, the entrance fee of $US 40 may be a good investment for her.

“At last year's Fair, for example, I met a fab young guy and our relationship lasted for quite a while. I hope that this year I will be lucky to find a man of my dreams. I'm looking forward to meeting someone both warm-hearted and rich,” she says.

No one can say how many Lyubas will turn into wealthy Cinderellas over the three nights of the Millionaire Fair in Moscow, but for many it’s worth having a go.
