Moscow is preparing to host a sport described as ‘Formula One on water’ after it made its debut in Montenegro.
The Adriatic resort of Budva was the stage for the first ever class one powerboat Grand Prix.
The event will reach Moscow early in July and as it is the second race of the season, most teams still have a chance to get on the podium.
With speeds reaching up to 300 kilometres per hour, it takes a very daring person to compete. It is the fastest competitive sport on water.
Dubai's team, Victory, took all the glory in Montenegro. They will arrive in Moscow more than 40 points ahead in the championship.
There are up to ten class one events per year, with the team that accumulates the most points being crowned the World Champion.
Offshore racing is attracting an increasing number of spectators each year. The list of class one powerboat world championship venues is also growing.
Powerboat racing has been around for over fifty years, but now the sport has made a huge leap into the future. Struggling with navigation, throttles and the wheel has been consigned to history. Today's teams are securely tucked into body hugging seats with safety cells from the aerospace industry. The crews wear fireproof overalls, driving boots and possess the latest communication technology.
