The acclaimed French actress Isabelle Huppert is a woman of many faces. She's as convincing playing 19th-century heroines as portraying complex women from the modern era. And a photo exhibition in Moscow’s Manezh proves the point.
More than 100 shots show the extent of her range. She appears detached from the outside world, as though she is building up a dialogue with her inner self. Yet she still manages to speak to the viewer – without uttering a word.
Legendary photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson, Nan Goldin and Annie Leibovitz are among those who’ve been attracted to the mystery of Isabelle Huppert - along with film directors like Claude Chabrol, Mikhael Haneke and Jean-Luc Godard.
The exhibition suggests that she allowed these photographers to come only so close, but no further.
Casual visitors to this show will be intrigued by the French actress. Fans of Isabelle Huppert will leave no nearer to solving her essential mystery.
