Three Russian satellites, which are part of Russia's global positioning system GLONASS, will be sent into orbit on Tuesday. The announcement was made by Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Ivanov at the Kremlin.

The rocket carrier will be launched from the Baikonur pad in neighbouring Kazakhstan.

The satellites will join the 15 satellites, which are already in orbit, extending the system to the whole of Russia.

The GLONASS system is used for military and civilian purposes.

The Russian receivers are intended to be a less expensive version than American GPS ones.

And Vladimir Putin expressed a personal interest:

“When can I get the system for my dog Koni so that she couldn’t go too far?”

And in reply to the President's joke, Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister said the pet gadgets will be available from next summer.
