It’s been the battle of Russia's football heavyweights. Defending champions Zenit were taking on runners-up Spartak Moscow on the start of Russia’s Premier League.
The game in Saint Petersburg finished goalless, though it was a tough battle.
Meanwhile, there were goals in the first game of the day. FC Moscow made a long trip to Vladivostok on Russia's east coast to face Luch Energiya. But it was the home side who found the net first. However, the visitors pressured for an equalizer and got it just over ten minutes later. 1-1 it finished.
Elsewhere Lokomotiv have got off to a bad start losing at home to Rubin 1-0. While in snowy Siberia Tomsk kept Dynamo Moscow at bay. The goalless game was played at minus 23 celsius!
A day earlier, one of the title favourites CSKA Moscow could only manage a 1-1 draw at home against newly promoted Shinnik.
