Published: 17 October, 2008, 13:57

Police are hunting a language student from Iceland suspected of accidentally killing a member of her Russian host family after playing with a gun. An international investigation is underway as it’s believed the 17 year old has now fled the country.

The death of a 20 year old man, which police believe was not deliberate, happened in Russia’s southern city of Astrakhan on October 10.

“The girl was playing with a gun when suddenly a shot rang. The gun happened to be loaded and the bullet hit the boy’s head,” a source from the police explained.

The man died in hospital four days later.

The Icelander went into hiding straight after the accident, fleeing first to Moscow and then abroad.

A criminal case has been launched and the girl has been put on a wanted list. The investigation is now trying to find out the circumstances of how the girl left the country.
