Former world chess champion, Russia’s Anatoly Karpov, has taken part in a giant tournament in Cuba. The massive event involved 4,000 simultaneous games, with Cuban students and teachers taking part.

The tournament was held at a university, built on the site of a former intelligence-centre used by the USSR.

Karpov arrived in the Cuban capital, Havana, on April 14, invited by the country’s sports officials to attend the fourth Cuban Sports Olympiads.

Karpov became famous as he held the World Chess Champion title for 16 years between the 1970s and 1990s.
