Key to Bach cantatas

One-of-a-kind collection of texts of Bach cantatas has been discovered at the Russian State Library in St. Petersburg. German experts called the finding of one of the key events in the study of Bach.
The composer wrote over 300 cantatas – vocal compositions in which words go hand in hand with the music.
According to art historian Tatiana Shabalina, the texts found at the library, shed light on the Leipzig period of Bach, when he composed his best known masterpieces.
Russian State Library in St. Petersburg boasts one of the best selections of booklets of Bach religious cantatas in the world. They exist only in one copy and are part of the archives of the Emperor’s Public Library.
