Lithuania cashes in on Soviet-era tourism

A controversial new tourist attraction in Lithuania allows visitors to experience Soviet-era repression. The trip back to the USSR starts nearly 25 km from the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius.

Once you’ve paid nearly 35 Euros to enter – there’s no going back. At least that's what everybody will be telling you to make you believe everything is for real in this theme park, where no effort has been spared to recreate the worst of the Soviet era.

Fittingly, it all takes place in an abandoned underground military bunker. Visitors are given the chance to wear padded working coats and descend to a depth of more than five metres.

Then the visitors are lined up and ordered to speak only Russian or be quiet. Those who disobey or smile are beaten with leather belts. It doesn’t hurt much, but organizers say the idea is to make you feel humiliated.

Then a KGB man may accuse you of illegally travelling abroad and bringing back hard currency. He may threaten to send you to Siberia unless you write a sincere admission of the crimes you’ve committed against the Soviet state.

At the end of each tour a captain will distribute certificates stating you have been a Soviet citizen for two hours.
