Moscow's recently opened gallery “Vinzavod” is hosting an exhibition of Saint Petersburg painter, Egor Ostrov. He creations are based on some classical masterpieces, including those of Leonardo da Vinci.
The artist belongs to the Saint Petersburg artistic school founded at the beginning of the 1990s. Its followers see their artistic aim in the correlation of modern art with already renowned, classical images of perfection. The rough walls of the contemporary art gallery are now covered with classical images of the Madonna created by outstanding artists centuries ago. Egor Ostrov's series of paintings presented at the latest display is entitled “Image and Symbol”. Working with up-to-date technologies, the artist uses shapes from the recognised paintings to create his own canvases. Images of the Madonna drawn with paints used in the car industry become apparent on canvases depending on the viewpoint. “I like experimenting with the latest paints containing different metals. I use these paints because at the moment they are believed to be the most durable, and so it will make my paintings exist for many years,” says Egor Ostrov.
