A British woman has given birth to a baby boy despite having had an operation for an abortion.

Jodie Percival, 25, had decided to terminate the pregnancy knowing the baby was likely to inherit a lethal kidney disease.

But some time after the abortion a scan revealed the woman was still pregnant

At first she was angry that the hospital had failed to carry out the operation properly.

Miss Percival’s genetic disorder meant her first baby had died 20 minutes after birth due to kidney failure. Her second child, Lewis, suffered from a similar condition and now has just one kidney.

But there was a happy ending as the baby, Finlay, was a healthy one, despite being three weeks premature. Although he has minor kidney damage, doctors say he will be able to lead a normal life.

“I still struggle to believe just what he has fought through,” said the happy mother. “Now he's here I wouldn't change it for the world”.
