Musical detective tries to solve mystery of Mozart’s death

Published: 19 January, 2007, 11:17

The Russian playwright Dmitry Minchenok has launched an investigation into allegations that Mozart was murdered. “Concert of the Doomed” is a musical detective show about the attempts of Mozart's widow and Salieri's wife to find the truth.

The two women are the main characters in the performance staged at Moscow's Chekhov Art Theatre. So it's natural, that costumes are an essential part of this story, which is full of secrets, mystery and music.

“The dresses are both modern and antique. The designer Svetlana Kalinina has a feeling of that epoch. The costumes' silhouettes, the way they are cut corresponds to Mozart's time. But they don't look dust-laden at all,” says Evdokia Germanova, who plays the part of Mozart's widow Constance.

The two women decide to stage a re-enactment of the crime to find out the truth. Those who loved the genius composer, and also became victims of the crime,  try to find the true murderer. More than ten people are under suspicion, including both of the amateur detectives.

And the music itself becomes a testimony, with the mythical Mozart's “Concert of the Doomed” revealing an encoded message from the composer about the name of his murderer.
