A record-breaking jackpot of 100 million roubles (USD $2.9 million) has been won in the Russian national lottery.
It’s by far the largest prize ever awarded in the draw’s short history.
It’s not known who the new millionaire is, but the winning ticket was sold in the town of Kolpino in the St. Petersburg region.
Organisers of Gosloto are now urging the lucky punter to come forward and claim their prize. Once they do, lottery staff will spend 45 days verifying the ticket’s authenticity before handing over the cash.
The Goslotto began last November, when TV viewers saw Olympic champion Maria Kiselyova reveal a prize of just 37,600 roubles (USD $1,100).
By February this year, the prize pot had swollen to 2,000,000 roubles (USD $58,000) which was won by a pensioner from Syktyvkar, north-western Russia. He’d managed to guess five of six numbers correctly.
The money raised by sales of the lottery tickets is used to fund the government’s 9-year physical training and sports development programme, which is seeing facilities being built across the country as well the nationwide promotion of sport in society.
