Various literary soirees and exhibitions organised to commemorate the outstanding Russian poet, Aleksandr Blok, who died on August 7, 1921, continue in Russia. Among them is a display of photographs related to the poet's life and work, which has opened in

Every year “Nashe Nasledie” (or “Our Heritage”) Magazine organises exhibitions dedicated to Aleksandr Blok.

Many of the poet's admirers visit these displays to remember the writer and recite his poems.

Each year's event has a special theme. The latest one highlights one of Blok's favourite places – his family Shakhmatovo manor.

The old building burnt down, but several years ago it was re-constructed.

“Once Blok said that all his poetry is about Russia, and Shakhmatovo for the poet was the heart of Russia, which beats in his every work,” said Vladimir Enisherlov, journalist.

Some rare portraits of Blok are also displayed. Taken by the poet's contemporary, Moisey Nappelbaum, they were revolutionary photography for their time. The photographer used only one source of light (it was customary to use three) and placed emphasis on the poet's eyes.

The exhibition also features photographs of the poet's step-father and some old editions of Blok's poetry.

After this current display closes, these items will enlarge the collection of Blok's belongings at his family estate.
