About 200 Glasgow Rangers supporters clashed with police in Manchester on Wednesday after their team lost 2-0 to Zenit in the UEFA Cup Final. Fifteen officers were injured in the riot, said to be the worst football violence in the UK in recent years.
CCTV footage released by the police shows officers massively outnumbered by fans. Police were chased down city streets. One video shows a policeman being knocked over before being beaten by Rangers fans.
Assistant Chief Constable of Manchester, Justin Curran, said he was surprised by the extent of the attacks.
“Some people chose to undertake in violence against police officers by throwing bottles and big pieces of wood at them, chasing them down the road. The level of violence that we actually faced at times was extremely concerning,” Curran said.
