Rothko tops New York art prices this year

Nearly four decades after his death, Latvian-born American artist Marc Rothko is now one of the world's most expensive painters. His 1952 piece, entitled ‘Number 15’, has just been sold at Christie’s Auction House for nearly $US 52 million, making it the
Christie’s describe it as one of the most prominent works of post-war modern art present at the auction.
Last year, the auction house sold Rothko's painting ‘White Centre’ for over $US 72 million.
