Russia's Emergencies Ministry says they have found a way to stop anglers being put in danger by thin ice over rivers in winter.

Each year rescuers try to save about 5,000 people from ice floes that have broken free, with many drowning.

But Emergencies Minister, Sergey Shoigu, says those days could be a thing of the past.

“In the northwest we’ve come up with a very efficient way to deal with the problem. At night, before the fishing begins, we run an ice breaker along the river. So when these people come in the morning – there is no ice. Nowhere to go,” Shoigu said.
