Zenit has beaten Villarreal in their UEFA Cup playoff on Wednesday, winning 1-0, but fellow countrymen Spartak Moscow were not so lucky.

The Saint Petersburg crowd witnessed a tight game between Zenit and Villarreal, with both sides having equal chances.

Zenit managed to get in front only in the second half. Russian international, Pavel Pogrebniak, scored after an error of judgment from Spanish goalie Diego Lopez.

Spartak's humiliation

Russia's silver medalists, Spartak Moscow, were thumped in France by Olympic Marseille, 3-0.

All goals came in the second half.

If both Russian clubs win their ties they'll meet each other in the UEFA Cup's last sixteen. But that doesn't seem likely after Spartak's poor performance.
