Russian directors storm Oscars ceremony

This year's Oscars ceremony has a special interest for Russia. Three films directed by Russians have been nominated for Oscars, the most ever.
The show will be hosted by the political satirist Jon Stewart.
Despite a weather forecast predicting rain, Tinsletown is said to be relieved that the ceremony will be going ahead at all. Settled just two weeks ago, a hundred-day writers’ strike left the fate of the show in doubt as the American film and TV industries were brought to a standstill.
Critics have noted that 2007 was a particularly strong year for movies but the Cohen Brothers “No Country for Old Men” is widely tipped to take “Best Film” award.
As for Russia’s hopes, “Twelve” by Nikita Mikhalkov and “Mongol” by Sergey Bodrov are up for Best Foreign Language Film alongside nominees from Austria, Israel and Poland. Meanwhile, “My Love” by Aleksandr Petrov, is in the category for Best Short Animated Film.
