‘Russian Giant’ regains WBA title

Russian boxer Nikolay Valuev has won back his WBA Heavyweight World Champion title, defeating Puerto Rican John Ruiz in a 12-round bout in Berlin’s Max Schmeling Arena. The judges scored it for Valuev unanimously.
More than 10,000 spectators attended the event.
Valuev, 34, at 2.13 metres the tallest boxer in the world, had already held the title for two years before he lost it to Uzbek Ruslan Chagaev in April of last year.
Now the 'Russian Giant' is a ‘temporary’ WBA champion. The current belt holder, Ruslan Chagaev, was declared by WBA a ‘champion in recess’, following an achilles tendon injury in June 2008.
Chagaev will now have to defend his title against Valuev.
