A Russian national has been sentenced to three months in jail in Madagascar after he and his wife were found guilty of trying to smuggle several rare insects and reptiles out of the country.
Vladimir Efremenko, from the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk, owns one of the largest rare animal collections in the country.
He was detained trying to smuggle a snake, a frog and several rare insects, including butterflies, out of Madagascar.
He is serving a three-month term in a Madagascan prison. It’s thought he is being held in very cramped conditions, and is forced to pay for food in prison.
Efremenko managed to get in touch with relatives in Russia who are now trying to challenge the court's decision.
