Russian businessman Maxim Viktorov has paid a record price for an 18th century violin at Sotheby's. The masterpiece made by Giuseppe Guarneri hasn't been played in public for more than 70 years.
The exact price Maxim Viktorov paid is being kept a secret, but it did exceed the previous world record sum paid for a musical instrument which was $US 3.6 million.
Viktorov promised the instrument would now be played regularly in public.
Instruments by Guarneri are considered to be as precious as those produced by his contemporary Antonio Stradivari.
