Russian soprano Ekaterina Shcherbachenko has won the BBC’s Cardiff Singer of the World 2009 award, beating stiff international competition.
The 32-year-old is a leading soloist with the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
Shcherbachenko triumphed in a final that included four other top vocalists: Japanese soprano Eri Nakamura (31), Italian tenor Giordano Lucà (21), Czech bass Jan Martiník (26), and Ukrainian counter-tenor Yuriy Mynenko (31).
Six hundred singers entered the competition with 25 making it to the semi-finals.
The eventual winner, Ekaterina Shcherbachenko, graduated from Moscow State Music Conservatory. In 2005 she joined the Stanislavsky and Nimerovich-Danchenko Theatre. She made her debut with the Bolshoi Theatre in the same year.
The Russian soprano has an impressive list of international credits on her cv, including work with Opéra National de Lyon in France, Italy’s Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
She took third place at the Shizuoka International Opera Competition in 2005 as well as winning a prize at the Francisco Viñas International Singing Competition in 2006.
Shcherbachenko will perform with the Bolshoi Theatre this year in Tokyo, Milan (La Scala) and Ljubljana.
The last Russian to win the BBC award was the famous baritone Dmitry Khvorostovsky. He took the honors 20 years ago in 1989.
