While most people try to keep warm in the winter, there are some who love the cold. A group of ice swimmers in the Moscow region have begun their swimming season. They believe taking the plunge in winter is the best way to stay healthy and feel young.

Those who fancy a healthy life-style, say winter may be the best time to build-up your immunity. In Russia they're known as walruses.

December is their favourite season with little wind and just minus 10 Celsius. At this time of year the walruses stay in the water for around 15 minutes. But they're not afraid of lower temperatures and take the plunge when it's – 40.

Ice swimmers also splash each other with freezing water and rub themselves down with snow – all in the cause of good health.

Pavel Boloyangov, the Ultimate Fighting World Champion, says recovering after a fight has become a fast process after he started ice diving.

“We fight without rules and get severe bruises all over the body. And winter swimming is the best way to get back into shape. It’s like a magic wand,” he says.

However, doctors say you must not try this kind of treatment unless you're prepared.

There are certain types of sickness – like heart conditions, that can lead to serious consequences, even to sudden death syndrome,” doctor Nurali Zokirov says.

While more traditional ways to maintain health are increasingly popular in Russia, such a breath-taking method has found some dedicated followers.
