Marat Safin will not take part in the Davis Cup final against the USA, having opted to end his season early. Safin explained his decision by saying there were other players who could do a much better job for the team.

Safin was one of Russia’s tennis team captain Shamil Tarpischev's options to play in Portland but the world number 36 has been out of form lately, losing in the opening round of this week's Madrid Masters.
