In tennis, Russia's women have safely negotiated a tricky tie against Israel to book their place in round two of the Federation Cup. It was Maria Sharapova who turned the tie Russia's way.

The Australian Open champion destroyed Israeli number one, Shahar Peer, 6-1 6-1 to put Russia 2-1 up.

And that set up Anna Chakvetadze to secure the victory.

Playing as a replacement for Dinara Safina, she defeated Tzipora Obziler.

Russia also won the final match, the doubles, to wrap up a 4-1 overall victory.

In the semis, Russia will face the winner of U.S. – Germany tie.
