Maria Sharapova has won her third title of the year, and her first ever on clay. The Russian beat Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova in the final of the Amelia Island Championships – 7-6, 6-3.
The top seed needed a tie break to see off the world number 34 in the first set.
And the Slovak continued to battle gamely in the second, but the big hits from back court eventually told.
As a result, Sharapova moves up to the fourth spot in the world rankings amid hopes for more wins on clay.
