The SMS is now set to become the new tool for romance, preferred over calls or e-mails. According to Wireless Association, Americans exchanged 363,000,000,000 text messages last year. That figure more than quadrupled from 81,000,000,000 exchanged in 2005.
Because of technology, the landscape of love and all that comes with it is changing shape. In the world of text messaging, face to face contact and phone conversations are no longer necessary for expressing emotions.
Short and sweet, text messages are rapidly replacing cell calls as the preferred form of romantic communication. So, when it comes to flirting or dating, the art of communication may come down to how quickly your thumbs move.
But one might wonder about the social implications of calling less and typing more.
Research conducted on text messaging, shows women view it as a way to foster emotional interaction, while men view it as a tool for managing relationships.
Sadly, the text accompanied by sound or blinking light doesn't always bring good news.
Both sexes admit to canceling dates or breaking up via text – but researchers say men are more likely to do so.
Dating counselor Dave Huggins advises clients to make first dates via text, but warns against using the tool for all occasion.
“Drunk texting is no good, breaking dates, canceling dates, a man should do face to face,” Huggins says.
Tradition rules would have a guy wait a few days before calling the girl, and then the girl debates how long to wait before calling him back. With text messaging, players of this dating game say all the rules have changed.
“If she takes a day to answer your text, wait a day to answer that one,” Huggins advises.
