Sochi eagerly awaits Olympic decision

Published: 27 March, 2007, 04:49

It's just 100 days until the IOC decides if Sochi will host the 2014 Winter Olympics. It is competing against South Korea's PyeongChang and Austria's Salzburg for the honour, which will be announced in Guatemala on July 4.

The International Olympic Committee evaluation visit took place in February, 2007. Sochi showed its visitors how it can live up to its slogan and really become the 'gateway to the future'.

“Should you get the Games, I'll be very happy to come back here in 2014 to enjoy skiing in Russian snow,” noted Chiharu Igaya, IOC Chairman.

The International Olympic Committee pointed out some concerns with the Sochi bid, such as the effect the games could have on the environment and the feasibility of building the facilities in time.

“Sochi presented a really unique bid because normally winter Olympic games are held in real winter countries, shall I say. Of course we can find flowers but in a house and not outside, but here you have palm trees on the street and so on, then in a matter of one hour we find ourselves in deep snow,” added Chiharu Igaya.

The Russian side is taking any concerns seriously, and know they can be overcome.

“Sochi has a great chance to win the bid as the city was selected by the IOC as one of the final 3 candidate cities – we must be doing something right,” said Leonid Tyagachyov, Russian Olympic Committee President.

Both Salzburg and PyeongChang haven't let previous failed bids for the winter Olympics deter them. They were as determined as Russia to put on a good show for the evaluation committee.

With all the evaluation visits complete, it is now up to the IOC to weigh up each country's merits before making its final decision.
