Soviet top secret unit turns into a public place

Published: 26 December, 2006, 04:57

An unusual underground museum placed in a former bunker has opened its doors in the Russian Far East. The bunker to house the Soviet secret police and ruling elite party has become a public place.

Engineers in Vladivostok have turned this underground shelter into a museum of Soviet civil defense. Now anyone can walk freely through its halls and tunnels.

Even though a radio set, a telephone, and piles of Lenin’s works are the only original items left, all tourists are still impressed.

Built in the late 1930’s, the underground unit had everything necessary for living and work. There is an electric power station, water supply, and even home appliances in that place.

Engineers believe there’s much more to be discovered in the city’s underground fortress.
