Spartak shoot down CSKA’s title dreams

CSKA’s chances of winning this year’s Russian Premiership are in tatters after they were beaten 1-0 by their bitter rivals Spartak in a tense Moscow derby. An away win for Rubin on Sunday will see the title go to Kazan for the first time.
The red-and-whites haven’t beaten the Army men since 2001, but the seven-year curse was finally lifted at the capital’s Luzhniki Stadium on Saturday.
CSKA dominated the first half but were guilty of squandering a bagful of chances.
After the break, Spartak came alive. Nikita Bazhenov scored the only goal of the game, securing all three points for the red-and-whites.
CSKA were then reduced to ten men when Yury Zhirkov failed to control his temper.
The 1-0 loss means league leaders Rubin will seal the title on Sunday if they beat Saturn in Moscow region.
