A Turkish TV series has caused uproar across the Arab world with a portrayal of modern life which has clashed with traditional Islamic values and culture. But while controversial, it’s also proved undeniably popular, especially in Palestine.

The love story of a young couple from the soap has stolen hearts across Gaza.

Streets are deserted when ’Noor’ is on and friendly get-togethers are timed not to clash. 

The romantic way the lead characters treat each other has a strong appeal for many viewers.

But not everybody welcomes the modern image of marriage and relationships that ‘Noor’ is bringing to traditional Islamic society. The show exposes issues that are rarely talked about openly, like abortion.

“The show is destroying Palestinian people,” says one viewer, Basam Al-Madhun

But it looks like ‘Noor’ has already been effective in changing some attitudes and perceptions in society.

“Among those who come to us seeking a solution to their problems, there are people who have been evidently influenced by the TV series,” insists Abdel Munim Al-Tagraui, a director of the Palestinian centre for democracy and conflict resolution.

“The Soap opera has led to groups of divorced women being formed as well as of groups of women who have temporarily separated from their husbands,” says Sumeya Habib, a psychologist.
