Stolen treasures on display in Hermitage Museum in Saint-Petersburg

Published: 08 December, 2006, 10:27

Although a scandal surrounding stolen artworks by museum staff has marred celebrations dedicated to the 242nd birthday of Saint-Petersburg's Hermitage Museum, the latter managed to recover some of the stolen treasures.

All the recovered treasures are now on display to the public.

While it would take 11 years to explore more than 3 million items exposed at the museum’s halls, half an hour is enough to see the exhibition symbolically called “The Return”. Experts say the value of most of 31 items featured is insignificant, but these icons and jewellery are now very famous for having been stolen.

Most of the 190 items still to be found and returned to the museum have much higher values than those that have been recovered.
